The story reveals early on that young Gemma is often overlooked by her mother, so it’s not unexpected when we jump ahead and find out that she—now Amelie Eve—has faced a significant ordeal before becoming a dentist and raising her own daughter, Maya, in the same house. She's been seeing Nick, a handsome police officer, discreetly, and everything appears settled until a trip to the basement with her child turns up some old family keepsakes – and then unsettling things begin happening in her dreams. A frightening incident within a pillow fort and an even more disturbing one at her dental office prompt her to consult Clare, who connects her with Elise, played by Lin Shaye. Elise explains something about an evil force attempting to break free from the Further realm and enter our world, bringing with it hordes of ravenous corpses. Apparently, Gemma possesses a unique ability that has drawn this threat’s attention, and it won't relent until she does something about it. The challenge lies in getting Maya and her boyfriend to believe her and accept that these dangers are real. There are some truly moving moments, particularly when contrasted with the seeming safety of blankets and pillows, but much of the film falls short on suspense. Those familiar with this series will likely concur that the supposed obstacles separating the malevolent from the past and present feel incredibly flimsy, along with a predictable abundance of two-way red doors. The performances are adequate, and some of the cinematography does contribute to a sense of danger, but it’s more direct than subtle. While there are enjoyable parts, this is a series that has run its course and should be stored away in a box in the cellar, marked "open in fifty years."
