The quest for meaning often feels like a personal and drawn-out search, particularly when you're unsure where to begin. This is precisely what defines a solitary man in his thirties (played by Le Phong Vu), who relocated from a remote mountain village to Saigon after much of his family moved to America. He’s struggling with feelings of emptiness and disorientation as he tries to discover a direction for his life, but nothing seems quite right, leaving him feeling increasingly detached. A family crisis forces him to return home to mourn a loss alongside his young nephew who has been orphaned (Nguyen Thinh). This trip then becomes symbolic of his larger search—a contemplative exploration of existence, affection, mortality, self-discovery and releasing the burdens of past experiences, including an old romance (Nguyen Thi Truc Quynh) now tied to someone else. The film’s visual style mirrors this journey with extended camera movements and a deliberate pace designed to highlight the time required for such a considered, reflective, and transformative passage, all enhanced by stunning visuals. It's the sort of story that offers viewers in similar situations plenty to ponder, especially since they will likely connect with what their character is going through. However, writer-director Thien An Pham’s first film—which received the 2023 Cannes Film Festival’s Golden Camera Award for best premiere feature—would be improved by some trimming, particularly during the latter portion. While visually impressive, certain scenes linger too long and could have been shortened by roughly 20 to 30 minutes to alleviate what becomes a testing three-hour length. Despite this flaw, “Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell” provides viewers with an intimate glimpse into the work of a promising new filmmaker brimming with potential, one who successfully combines beauty and inspiration in a perceptive final product. As cliché as it sounds, locating our position within everything rests more on the process than the outcome, something the main character learns firsthand—a realization that many can probably understand.
