I found myself liking the initial installment (from 2015) considerably more than this one. "Riley" seems content with her family life until she starts puberty, which sends her down a path where her internal control panel isn’t just managed by familiar figures like “Fear,” “Joy,” and “Anger.” Now, she also has to contend with feelings such as disgust, envy, boredom, and especially anxiety. Perhaps the film should have been named after that feeling, because it becomes a rather humorless look at the pressure young people face to gain acceptance. It’s all about being well-liked, succeeding, and excelling – like on the ice hockey team. Established bonds are sacrificed for new goals, and yes, there's truth in how this portrays our tendency to change our minds. However, I felt that what happens next is too predictable, and there's a lot of constant talking. “Anger” provides some amusement, and "Ennui" delivers the occasional witty line, but it just didn’t connect with me. The animation is typical Pixar quality – bright and competent, but not particularly memorable. By the end, I was wishing there was a way to simply turn off that large control panel. I'm likely too old to fully appreciate this as children will, but these studios need to find a way to appeal to adults alongside kids, otherwise people will start using their phones because they’re bored. It’s decent enough, but ultimately forgettable, unfortunately.
