Pixar’s latest offering, “Inside Out 2,” is a remarkable achievement—a sequel that surpasses its predecessor in quality. The film begins with Riley (voiced by Kensington Tallman) just after her thirteenth birthday, as Joy (Amy Poehler) reviews Riley's accomplishments and prepares for an important hockey game alongside friends Grace (Grace Lu) and Bree (Sumayyah Nuriddin-Green). Their performance on the ice gains them attention from the coach of the Firebirds, who invites the three to a camp that could lead to their inclusion on the team as freshmen. The situation shifts when a Puberty alarm sounds, triggering construction work to update the control center. Fear (Tony Hale), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Liza Lapira), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) react negatively to these changes and the introduction of new emotions—Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter-Hauser)—creates a foundation for fresh conflicts. At camp, Riley becomes captivated by a group of popular girls led by Valentina (Lilimar), leading her to exclude her friends in an attempt to become part of the “in” crowd. The new emotions try to protect Riley from potential future problems and want to get rid of the older emotions that they believe are holding her back, setting her up for failure. Forced to journey to the most remote areas of Riley’s mind to retrieve something essential, the original emotions hope to reverse the damage being done and bring Riley back, who is struggling with adolescence and facing a surge of new, often conflicting feelings and situations. The film has plenty of humor and charm, while also offering an honest portrayal of the changes and pressures that children experience during their teen years—all without feeling overly serious. Both the new and established emotions are well-developed, and there are many moments throughout the movie that will elicit laughter as well as a sense of nostalgia for adults, particularly those with kids approaching adolescence. The film is genuinely touching; several audience members were visibly moved towards the end of our screening. Pixar has once again created an enjoyable and relatable story that can be appreciated by everyone in the family. 4.5 stars out of 5.
