Inseminoid Devoid, formerly known as Horror Planet, was directed by Norman J. Warren and features a script from Nick and Gloria Maley. A group of space researchers finds itself targeted after an alien being infects one of their own, triggering protective instincts that transform her into a violent killer. The production team insisted it wasn’t intended as a low-budget imitation of Ridley Scott's Alien, and apparently executives at 20th Century Fox didn’t see any issues with the film. But is it just a blatant attempt to make money? You can decide for yourself, but ultimately movies like this highlight how much you appreciate Alien; despite differences in production costs. Inseminoid certainly has an interesting title, and it's laughably terrible. The plot doesn’t really work (it seems the script might have been written very quickly), its low budget isn’t charming, and the performances are dreadful. Throw in some poor special effects, costumes that look like they belong to another era, and a pervasive feeling of exploitation for gore, and you've got a truly bad film. Could it be enjoyable as silly entertainment? It is funny! When actresses such as Geeson and Beacham treat it with seriousness—particularly the former really committing to the crazed maternal role—it’s hard not to find humor in it, especially when those alien glove puppets appear. Stephanie Beacham has admitted she took the part solely for financial reasons; a more commendable decision would have been to donate her salary back to the audience members who had to endure this mess. Alien assault, murder, chaos, and cannibalism—it shouldn’t be humorous, but it is. 2/10
