The movie seems set on redefining what it means to “have skeletons in the closet.” It’s hard to call this a truly bad film, considering there’s so much inferior material that gets widespread attention. The film is a respectable effort at creating a thriller full of mystery and manages to entertain reasonably well. That doesn't make it good though; it’s merely adequate. The story kicks off with the unexpected death of a wealthy banker, head of the Monroe family—a family deeply embedded within America’s elite, Anglo-Saxon circles, built on “Ivy League” credentials, Skull & Bones membership, and the influence of Wall Street. Following the will reading and an uneven distribution of inheritance, Lauren, the eldest daughter and an attorney in Manhattan, uncovers a disturbing secret her father kept: a secluded bunker on their property where a man has been held captive for thirty years. This prisoner possesses knowledge of the family’s most damaging secrets. I'll concede that the story starts with promising ideas—what about a powerful, wealthy family that claims to be spotless and strives to maintain a pristine image? However, there are significant logical issues: it seems unbelievable that someone could be imprisoned for thirty years without serious health problems, muscle loss, or digestive difficulties. The protagonist’s marriage also feels superficial; she's rarely shown with her husband or daughter. The conclusion felt rushed and didn’t quite deliver. It's clear a skilled lawyer would have investigated further and gathered more information before acting on the situation involving this captive man. Simon Pegg delivers an excellent performance as the imprisoned man. Despite his character being handled inconsistently by the script, he did a commendable job adapting to the role. I also appreciated Lily Collins, though she seems too young for her part; she looks like a recent graduate or intern rather than a seasoned prosecutor—she doesn't project the necessary experience! The film’s technical aspects are fairly subdued. There aren’t any flashy visual effects, and it relies on carefully chosen locations and environments. The costumes and cinematography don’t offer anything particularly noteworthy. However, the atmosphere is effectively developed, gradually becoming more intense as the story unfolds.
