I’ve seen movies that leave me puzzling over how the writer—Matthew Kennedy in this instance—even conceived of the narrative...and this is certainly one of them! Lily Collins portrays Lauren, an ambitious Assistant District Attorney whose affluent father passes away from a heart attack. He bequeaths most of his wealth to his wife (Connie Nielsen) and handsome Congressman son (Chace Crawford), but she gets a disappointingly small inheritance along with a peculiar key. Her subsequent investigation reveals experiences beyond her expectations, as well as the repercussions that follow this, frankly unbelievable revelation. For any mystery to work, it needs some degree of believability, and this one is seriously lacking in that regard. The character, presented as smart and perceptive, makes decisions that are astonishing—often reckless, innocent, and even foolish—which undermines her credibility early on, resulting in a confused film featuring Simon Pegg as an improbable and unpersuasive lead. It’s probably acceptable to watch when it's gloomy outside on a cold, rainy night—but don't expect much.
