Paul Thomas Anderson’s newest movie, 'Inherent Vice,' certainly feels like his work. The film has an excellent musical score, really strong performances, and a deliberately complicated narrative that centers on a private eye (Phoenix) looking into the vanishing of an ex-girlfriend. The script is quite perplexing; understanding it proves difficult because it’s intentionally designed to be so, introducing numerous characters and several different plot threads. I understand this confusing element aligns with the original book. Ultimately, I had to acknowledge that the film was too disorienting to fully grasp, but I did appreciate the many funny moments and amusing circumstances throughout. Joaquin Phoenix delivers a fantastic performance as Larry "Doc" Sportello, and he’s supported by an impressive ensemble including Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro. 'Inherent Vice' isn't your average lighthearted entertainment, and I found myself quite lost in the dense plot. ★★★½
