Looking back at the big movies from the nineties, it’s easy to overlook just how innovative they were. Films like Jurassic Park and Independence Day pushed boundaries, earning awards and ushering in a new age for special effects in cinema. But this movie is more than just impressive visuals: the direction, script, characters, actors, narrative, rhythm—absolutely everything about it combines to create an ideal mix of excitement, energy, and pure entertainment. It’s unusual to see a film that so skillfully merges action, adventure, humor, suspense, and science fiction like this one does. Will Smith was an up-and-coming actor alongside strong performances from Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman. I think we should seriously consider electing Bill Pullman's Thomas Whitmore as President; his speech motivating the troops before the final battle is among the most memorable moments in film! Independence Day established a standard for alien invasion movies, successfully developing individual storylines for its main characters while bringing them together to save the planet in the end. Roland Emmerich knows how to make a disaster movie—this is his finest work.
