This political comedy has a lot of energy and some genuinely sharp lines. The film presents themes of ambition, inadequacy, disregard for others, and disloyalty in abundance. It held my attention throughout, even if I occasionally questioned its artistic merit. The characters felt somewhat flat to me, like simple figures, and it was notable that they hadn’t changed by the story's conclusion. Perhaps development isn’t essential in comedic works, but a bit more complexity would have been welcome. I felt that Gandolfini, Gina McKey, and Mimi Kennedy did the best job of bringing their characters to life, although the writing ultimately failed them. The Malcolm character seemed always present to interrupt and dismiss them. The frequent use of profanity suggests a lack of creativity; it’s an easy way for writers to attempt to excite viewers. However, hearing that language so often diminishes its impact and highlights the script's shortcomings. While I remained engaged with the movie, it never truly resonated with me. I simply went along with what was happening.
