The unsettling nature of *In the Earth* is something you could learn about beforehand and it still wouldn’t ready you for what unfolds when you watch it. Ben Wheatley incorporates psychedelic aspects reminiscent of *A Field in England* more so than in his other works. Though some might find the absence of clear explanations irritating, or question whether the events depicted are even understandable, the film effectively uses the ambiguity surrounding COVID and the potential hazards that could emerge as restrictions ease. Experiencing *In the Earth* feels like a COVID-induced hallucination with Ben Wheatley leading the way; all you can do is brace yourself and wait for things to return to normal. Regardless of your feelings about it, things are poised to become strange.
