The discovery of a murdered young woman in New York sets the story in motion, introducing police officer “Molloy” (Mark Ruffalo) who meets local teacher "Frannie" (Meg Ryan), whose garden contained the body. As he investigates, Molloy and Frannie begin an affair that is overtly sexual; however, her increasing exposure to him leads her to question his theory about a serial killer, raising the possibility that he himself might be dangerous. The film's atmosphere is unsettling due to its deliberate pacing and visuals, but I don’t feel the explicit nude scenes or suggestive dialogue contribute enough to make it particularly noteworthy. The storyline feels familiar, the ending felt hurried, and beyond Ryan recreating a sensual diner scene reminiscent of “When Harry…” (1989), there's little that sticks with you. It’s possible the more graphic intimate encounters generated greater attention in America, but for viewers accustomed to European detective stories blending violence and romance, this combination isn’t particularly fresh, groundbreaking, or captivating. While visually appealing, it doesn’t leave a lasting impression as either a memorable or frightening experience.
