Reno on In the Blood

7/10 · Dec 24, 2016

After seeing 'Haywire', I really believed Gina Carano could become Hollywood's go-to action star, but she’s been stuck in smaller parts that don’t do her justice. I was eager to see this movie and put off watching it for a while, but finally got around to it, and she’s fantastic—clearly made for stunt work, and I almost feel like the film was designed just for her. You could describe it as a condensed version of 'Taken', though it's still an enjoyable action film. The story is pretty nonsensical, yet somehow manages to function as a thriller. It centers on a woman raised by a strict father who taught her self-defense techniques. Later in life, she marries a rich man and while they’re honeymooning in the Caribbean, he disappears after some kind of mishap. She then dedicates herself to finding him, using those skills to confront the dangerous people on the island. The extent of her fight is what unfolds throughout the rest of the film. It's not the director’s strongest work—the same person who made 'Into the Blue'—but it might appeal to viewers looking for something to pass the time. I mostly enjoyed it because of Gina Carano, and I am hoping she takes on more roles like this. Some aspects could have been improved; for instance, the final chase felt a bit clumsy. Ultimately, I don’t think it matters much given the kind of environment the story is set in. Just try to enjoy yourself while watching without getting hung up on its shortcomings. _6.5/10_
