The conflict isn’t really a war; it's more like a disagreement between wildcats. John Wayne and Albert Dekker vie for oil rights in Indian territory while also pursuing Martha Scott in this Republic Pictures film, which was filmed in Utah. It’s an unusual Western because of its characters and the relatively contemporary setting, with Wayne and Dekker representing different eras of the West. The story is by Thomson Burtis, who along with Eleanore Griffin and Ethel Hill wrote the screenplay; Albert Rogell directed it in a straightforward style typical of his filmography. What starts as a fairly ordinary plot actually improves considerably in its final third, when the action finally becomes engaging and we get something that feels lively. The romantic elements are handled lightly, which doesn't quite work, and a great fight between Wayne and Dekker is undermined by the director’s inability to hide the fact that stunt performers were doing the action—though they certainly deserve recognition for their efforts. George ‘Gabby’ Hayes provides dependable support, and as always, Wayne has plenty of screen presence, especially when firing his pistol. Despite having a larger budget than most Republic Pictures productions, it's still mainly something to interest fans of 1940s John Wayne films. It gets a 4/10.
