Neil Jordan directed In Dreams, which he and Bruce Robinson wrote based on Bari Wood’s novel. Annette Bening, Aidan Quinn, Robert Downey Jr., and Paul Guilfoyle appear in the film; Elliot Goldenthal composed the music and Darius Khondji was responsible for the cinematography. This manufactured thriller features Bening as a housewife overwhelmed by sorrow who begins experiencing shared thoughts with a serial killer (Downey Jr., an odd choice for the role). Jordan is undeniably talented, but also deeply irritating, and In Dreams exemplifies that. The film’s visuals are remarkable; Jordan and Khondji create a disturbing atmosphere, however the flashbacks lack clarity and any building tension or narrative flow disappears within excessive stylistic flourishes. If you disregard the surface presentation, it's just another predictable serial killer story concealed by pretentious artistic choices. Bening delivers a performance worthy of something better, and her work, along with the film’s visual elements, are what keep the movie engaging until its conclusion. It earns a 5/10.
