It’s hard to find a better example of the depths of human callousness and greed! The story revolves around two individuals released from prison who devise a scheme to steal $10,000 supposedly kept in a safe at the Clutter family's home in a rural area. "Dick" (played by Scott Wilson) is the one who comes up with the idea. He’s an unpleasant character, skilled at influencing “Perry” (Robert Blake), who isn’t quite as forceful, into breaking into the house and then fleeing to Mexico for an easy life. As you might expect, things don't go according to plan, and soon these men find themselves on a most wanted list, being tracked by the persistent and intelligent police officer "Dewey" (John Forsythe). The film is based on a true story as seen through Truman Capote’s eyes and can be divided into two distinct parts. The initial section introduces the characters and sets up the crime, while the second part focuses on the chase and its ramifications – director Richard Brooks handles both sections with skill. There are also compelling performances from the two men whose hopes quickly turn to despair, though they rarely show any real kindness—with one exception being when collecting money back for returned bottles. The film doesn't rely heavily on graphic violence, but it’s suggested and left to the viewer’s imagination, which can be quite effective, especially in Blake's portrayal of a character who sometimes displays gentleness and a childlike demeanor. As the story unfolds, there are numerous psychological aspects of their personalities that are worth examining, and this becomes as fascinating for "Dewey" as it is for us. The music also contributes significantly to the overall sense of threat, as does the often dynamic and intense cinematography; at times, you might even feel a little sympathy for these obviously broken men as fate takes its course. I definitely recommend seeing it—it’s an in-depth look at two individuals with very few moral limits.
