Bogart and Gloria Grahame both deliver excellent performances in this layered and detailed crime noir. He portrays Dixon, a writer struggling financially who unexpectedly becomes a suspect in a murder case. His neighbor, Laurel, surprisingly appears at the police station to provide him with a solid alibi; she confirms seeing the victim leave his house while he remained at home. Initially, there’s no reason to question her account, but as the narrative unfolds and their relationship deepens, cracks begin to emerge in both of their personalities, prompting uncertainty about who—if anyone—is being truthful. The police continue their pursuit, and Dixon's erratic actions heighten tension for everyone involved. It’s a drama that moves along at a good pace and is skillfully written, showcasing the talents of the two leads. Their on-screen chemistry feels as questionable as it does affectionate. Throughout, one isn’t entirely certain what’s happening until the surprisingly impactful ending, which deviated from my expectations. Experiencing this film for ninety minutes with a large screen would be ideal; it provides a depth of cinematography and a compelling George Anthiel score that enhances the strong story, all under the confident direction of Nicholas Ray, who is also performing at his best.
