I walked into “Impractical Jokers: the Movie” completely unfamiliar with what it was about or the four comedians behind the truTV show of the same name. By the end, I had laughed so much that I actually had tears in my eyes. It’s kind of like a combination of old-fashioned “Candid Camera” episodes and something similar to “Jackass,” but without being quite as shocking. The premise involves four friends (Joe Gatto, James Murray, Brian Quinn and Sal Vulcano, also called The Tenderloins) who compete in increasingly wild dares designed to humiliate one another. With the help of concealed cameras and microphones, they challenge each other to do or say things, and if someone declines, that person is penalized. If that sounds amusing, or you’re a regular visitor to Funny or Die, chances are you'll find this movie entertaining. The film builds on this concept with a fairly simple storyline. It recounts an embarrassing incident from their high school days in the early 1990s, which leads The Jokers on a road trip from New York to Miami and involves hidden camera challenges along the way. Nearly every joke landed well, and I haven’t laughed so much during a movie theater visit in quite some time. There are certain jokes that only people who watch the show will understand (like references to problems they had during the 5th season; it sounds like things were really rough!), but even without knowing anything about it, I was able to feel like part of their group. Perhaps this worked out well for me because I didn’t have any prior knowledge. I quickly found myself liking all of them, and there's something genuinely enjoyable about watching adult men playfully mess around. It was a pleasure spending time with these guys.
