Impetigore immediately grabs your attention. The film opens with Maya and her friend Dini working late hours at a toll booth. A particularly unsettling and intense moment occurs when Maya is pursued and assaulted by an unexpected driver. Following this, she finds herself in a family home and a small village, and the movie presents a genuinely believable depiction of rural Southeast Asia—the scenery felt so familiar that it brought back memories of my own travels throughout the region. The film experiences a significant change in tone roughly midway through, which some might find abrupt, transitioning from a lighthearted road trip atmosphere to intensely graphic and disturbing horror. There’s also an extended sequence later on that feels like too much information being delivered at once, disrupting the story's progression. However, those are minor complaints about what is ultimately a very enjoyable journey through Indonesia’s countryside.
