The movie "Impact" showcases the consequences of clashing forces. San Francisco businessman Walter Williams escapes an assassination attempt orchestrated by his unfaithful wife’s lover, who unfortunately dies in the incident with severe burns. Believing Williams to be the one who perished, authorities arrest his wife and charge her with murder. Meanwhile, Williams disappears and begins planning retribution while residing in the quiet town of Larkspur, Idaho. Although he discovers renewed purpose and a chance to reassess his life, he understands that he must return and expose the truth—a decision that could very well lead to his downfall! Arthur Lubin directed "Impact," featuring Brian Donlevy, Ella Raines, Charles Coburn, and Helen Walker in leading roles. The storyline itself isn't particularly original, and I won’t go into specifics, but it brought comparisons to films like “The Postman Always Rings Twice” to mind right away after watching this entertaining and well-made film. What truly sets the movie apart is its outstanding performances—Donlevy and Raines are both wonderful—and its ability to reveal the central twist without telegraphing it beforehand. Positioned somewhere between a noir thriller and a drama, "Impact" may not hold up as well on subsequent viewings; however, after seeing it once, I feel it leaves a positive impression. And that’s not just because Ella Raines looks absolutely beautiful in this film!!! It earns an 8/10.
