Following "Amadeus"'s popularity, filmmakers felt compelled to create a biographical film about this significant figure from the 1800s, someone instrumental in establishing Vienna as a central hub for classical music. Gary Oldman delivers a noteworthy performance, and director Bernard Rose leads us through the life—and numerous romantic relationships—of this gifted individual. His imperfections are evident early on; his occasionally harsh childhood experiences and tendency to pursue many women certainly didn't portray him as someone easy to like. As deafness increasingly affects him, his personality becomes more short-tempered and less predictable. The narrative unfolds as a remembrance, beginning with his funeral, largely told through the viewpoint of his friend Anton Schindler (a thoughtful portrayal by Jeroen Krabbé), allowing us to observe how his character could shift between being generous, ruthless, ardent, and affectionate to being self-centered and unpleasant. Isabella Rossellini and Johanna Reiss provide solid supporting performances that maintain the film's direction and interest. There are numerous chances to hear his compositions performed, likely in a setting he himself might have frequented. The level of care given to every aspect is remarkable: costumes, scenery, and locations all appear wonderful. Dialogue is used sparingly, but it’s how the actors interpret their lines—particularly Gary Oldman—that truly distinguishes this film. The two hours passed quickly, and for those who appreciate his music or are curious about the man himself, this makes for an enjoyable viewing experience.
