I found myself drawn in by the initial concept behind this version of the immaculate conception, but the actual production and performances were on another level entirely. Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney) is brought to a charmingly old-fashioned convent where she receives an enthusiastic reception. People constantly comment on her beauty and perceived blessing, which seems at odds with her genuine modesty. It's startling, then, when she’s called before the cardinal (Giorgio Colangeli) and subjected to some intrusive medical examinations that uncover.... I won't spoil it, but for a time Michael Mohan kept my attention as things unfolded in the tranquil setting of this historic sanctuary. Unfortunately, the narrative quickly spirals out of control, leaving me confronted with Sweeney’s restricted acting abilities and an abundance of over-the-top reactions involving a chicken, a shadowy catacomb, and a villainous scheme that places considerable pressure on our resourceful novice. As "Yoda" once observed, “a lot of shouting and ketchup don't constitute a horror film,” and after roughly thirty minutes it became clear that the writing was failing and my interest began to diminish. It’s challenging to keep this genre fresh – there aren't many concepts that haven't been explored repeatedly. There’s a spark of originality here, but it’s quite small.
