It brought back a memory of Tom Payne’s appearance in "The Physician" (2013), specifically a scene involving Stellan Skarsgård – that might have been enough to excuse this movie if he'd had a more substantial role, but apparently, after reading the script, he decided it was only worth one day on set, which explains his minimal screen time. Instead, we get the predictable story of a troubled family: he’s recently married to Jessica (DeWanda Wise), a kindhearted animator attempting to maintain good relations with his two daughters – Taylor (Taegen Burns), a teenager, and young Alice (Pyper Braun). The family moves into his father's house, now that he’s in assisted living, and shortly afterward, the youngest daughter finds a bear. A teddy bear, to be precise. What could possibly go wrong? It turns out this isn't a pleasant bear; it's decidedly sinister and quickly begins trying to draw them all (except Tom, who has already abandoned ship) into an alternate dimension filled with rooms depicting various situations – some harmless, others not so much. Jessica is understandably losing her composure, but luckily their neighbor Gloria (Betty Buckley) offers some helpful advice that might get them through this increasingly dangerous situation. Or will it? The film unfolds exactly as anticipated; there’s nothing fresh or inventive about it, and the acting is only passable at best. However, it isn't quite as dull as excerpts from a children’s horror movie writing guide. Some of the lines are truly astonishing, leaving you looking up at the cinema ceiling in disbelief. It’s a typical Blumhouse production that occupies your time without requiring any mental effort – truthfully, you could skip to the last ten minutes and miss very little of what came before.
