Political dramas can be challenging for some viewers, but they often become more relatable when centered on individual experiences within that broader context, even for those who don't usually seek out films like these. Director Walter Salles’s newest film achieves this balance exceptionally well. This outstanding movie based on a true story recounts the deeply affecting experience of former Brazilian politician Rubens Paiva (played by Selton Mello), who was abducted and disappeared in 1971 under Brazil’s military dictatorship. Paiva, an engineer at the time of his capture, became a target due to his progressive political views and secret work aiding those resisting the strict policies enforced by the country's conservative government. Following his arrest, Paiva’s wife, Eunice (Fernanda Torres), and daughter, Eliana (Luiza Kosovski), were also detained as authorities attempted to identify his contacts and uncover his activities. Despite this intense pressure from officials, Eunice and her family remained resolute in their efforts to learn what had become of him. The film doesn’t just deliver a suspenseful narrative; it offers a powerful portrayal of a family's unwavering hope and commitment to discovering the truth, regardless of how disturbing that truth might be. "I’m Still Here" succeeds on every level, consistently captivating audiences with an intense and emotionally resonant journey reminiscent of Costa-Gavras’ “Missing” (1982). I believe this film is the clear frontrunner for several Oscars this year—best picture, lead actress (Torres), and international feature—and deserves many other nominations as well.
