Dirk Bogarde delivers a strong performance within these amusing, yet enjoyable, films set during wartime, and his collaboration with Marius Goring helps to maintain a good pace throughout. He portrays a British officer stationed on Crete who devises a scheme to abduct the German general "Kreipe" (Goring), along with the assistance of the local resistance. It doesn't take long for them to realize that the general isn’t heavily guarded. While securing him proves relatively straightforward, safeguarding him and arranging his departure from the island becomes considerably more challenging, as he demonstrates considerable intelligence. As the soldiers search the island, a series of risky maneuvers unfold in this chase between pursuer and pursued. There's an abundance of charm and playful antics to be found, and the storyline even allows for moments of moral uprightness. The story is based on true events, and the film’s production values are fairly typical, but it’s skillfully assembled, and I did find myself enjoying it.
