Those who have experienced tedious, cyclical work situations will likely connect with this film—particularly if it involved numerous interviews, assessments of cognitive abilities, and required tests just to gain entry (and face the perpetually irritated security guard!). “Domenico” (Sandro Panseri) comes to the realization that his life in the suburbs feels empty unless he secures one of the coveted permanent positions, so he travels to the city where he encounters “Antonietta” (Loredana Detto), who shares a similar ambition. They seem to have an attraction for each other, but they are assigned to separate departments, work different schedules, and despite his persistence—even in heavy rain—in trying to see her again, it’s unclear if they'll ever manage to find time for privacy or potentially develop a relationship. The film doesn't move along at a rapid pace, and the conversations aren’t particularly clever or impactful, but there is considerable strength in the way it’s filmed and the sounds used. Much of the movie feels like an unedited documentary, capturing the recurring noises of ringing phones, typewriters, and canteen chatter, day after day. The filmmaking creates a sense of confinement, extending to the constant rain, Panseri's ever-present raincoat, and even a New Year’s celebration that highlights how isolated this young man truly is. His acting is restrained but often quite moving as his position within the corporate structure becomes clear toward the film’s conclusion—a moment that’s both humorous and disheartening. Is this what he envisioned for himself? Perhaps things weren't really better elsewhere.
