I saw the English adaptation, "Living," prior to experiencing this initial film, and now I regret that choice. While I found "Living" more appealing, it’s possible my preference is simply a matter of cultural taste since both were penned by the same Japanese writer, who also had time to refine the script between projects. The sequences set in nightclubs and bars early on appeared to stretch out considerably compared to what's shown in the remake—or at least that was my impression. The later scenes featuring the young woman felt similarly prolonged. However, this wouldn’t be unexpected given that the original runs 40 minutes longer overall. Despite these differences arising from distinct cultural contexts, they are worth observing, and I suggest watching both versions. Ideally, though, one should begin with this earlier film, as I stated previously.
