I was excited to see "IF" because I like John Krasinski's work, but afterward, I felt let down somewhat. It wasn't a poorly made film; my reaction stemmed from having certain hopes going in that weren’t satisfied. “IF” is competently crafted and has some promising concepts, though it doesn't completely realize what it seems to be building toward. The movie is obviously geared towards children, which isn't necessarily a problem, but the plot felt too straightforward, and I wished certain parts had been developed further. There were instances where the filmmakers attempted to create a sense of urgency that didn’t quite land or feel substantial; these moments seemed hurried, and that was my general impression for much of the runtime. The movie has an appealing fantasy aspect that could have been broadened into something truly special, but it only touches on the surface level. The story moves along quickly, which might suit a younger audience, but I had hoped for more investigation and elaboration of the ideas presented. Fortunately, the performances are enjoyable. The actors do well in their parts, injecting humor and warmth into the film. Steve Carell’s portrayal of Blue was particularly memorable; he delivered a performance that was both humorous and touching. I would have liked to see more of John Krasinski himself, as his involvement always brings something unique. Ultimately, "IF" is an enjoyable movie—pleasant, funny, and sweet—but it didn't quite satisfy me. It’s worth seeing, particularly if you are looking for a lighthearted film suitable for the whole family, but don’t anticipate anything more than that.
