What if I were to suggest that the friends we imagine as children are actually genuine? And what happens to them when those kids outgrow their need for companionship? "If" is the name given to a child’s imaginary friend, offering solace and support during childhood. The question becomes: where do these companions go once they're no longer needed? It seems the term "imaginary" might be misleading. Cailey Fleming portrays Bea, a 12-year-old girl who experienced the loss of her mother at a young age, and now faces her father’s illness as well (played by John Krasinski). She moves in with her grandmother to remain close to the hospital, where she begins encountering former Imaginary Friends. Ryan Reynolds serves as her guide, revealing that these beings are unhappy and long to be reunited with the children who abandoned them. Some of these "friends" can be quite unsettling. Krasinski’s written and directed film attempts a tone similar to a live-action “Monsters, Inc.” However, it feels like an idea best suited for animation, as the concept struggles to maintain believability due to its inherent silliness. The storyline seems to falter in establishing a sense of plausibility. While it may appeal to very young viewers, I found it overly sentimental and contrived. It’s easy enough to watch, given Krasinski's evident care in handling the material, and Reynolds appears to be having fun with his part; still, that wasn’t sufficient for me.
