The film introduces "Ulzii" (played by Battsooj Uurtsaikh), whose life stands in sharp contrast to the brightly lit city surrounding him – a place marked by communication towers on every hill. He lives with his mother and three siblings in a yurt equipped with a single-burner electric stove and a coal-burning heater. A talented physics student, he’s encouraged by his teacher (Batzorig Sukhbaatar) to participate in competitions and concentrate on academics. However, it becomes apparent that this young man is essentially supporting the family. His mother, recently widowed, turns to alcohol when facing difficulties and expresses a desire to return to her former life as a rural herdsman. Their relationship is strained, and things escalate when she takes their youngest child, leaving Ulzii and his older siblings behind to continue their education. The story then follows Ulzii as he’s compelled to make difficult decisions, balancing the family's urgent needs with the time required for his studies. Shortages of coal and wood, along with an infection his brother can’t afford to treat, push him toward choices that address immediate problems, but what about his own future? I felt Uurtsaikh handled the role effectively, portraying a young boy’s ambitions alongside his responsibilities as a surrogate father figure. The actors playing the siblings also perform well, establishing a believable family dynamic – they all sleep in one bed – and demonstrating their mutual care and willingness to help each other. The living conditions are grim. There's a striking visual contrast between the harsh coldness of their environment and the relatively comfortable city dwellings nearby. The film can be intense, but it also has moments of humor. For instance, who would have thought that treating a mouth ulcer involved a saddle-bit and a big toe? It’s his younger brother who suggests they hibernate, and I probably would have joined him if I'd been present.
