It’s unusual for friends to take on other people's identities, isn't it? Although it’s not as terrible as some reviewers claim, Identity Thief is difficult to suggest to moviegoers seeking a lighthearted comedy. Clocking in at almost two hours, the film seems to have dropped Melissa McCarthy into a project, constructed several dubious recurring jokes around her, and then added Jason Bateman for some appeal. The story loses momentum roughly halfway through, becoming entangled in improbable situations and attempts at serious dialogue. It’s really an odd mix of writing that doesn't do the performers any favors. What could have been a promising idea falls short, unfortunately. Identity Thief avoids being ranked last only because viewers who like the two stars will find some entertainment value in their performances. 5/10
