A beauty influencer, Rose (Emma Jade), finds herself targeted by spiteful messages from another artist after a sponsored cosmetic item leads customers to experience skin problems. As she becomes entangled in a destructive relationship with Lily (Alyssa Anthony), Rose descends into a troubling cycle of substance abuse, suspicion, and intense insecurity until she reaches a devastating low point. This independent film, written and directed by Matthew Freiheit, is visually impressive, full of neon lighting, a vibrant color scheme, and memorable images. The movie’s atmosphere aligns with its subject matter, exploring the fabricated personas common online and our tendency to pursue flawlessness and approval. The narrative carries a clear purpose, but understanding the plot can be challenging due to fragmented scenes that make it difficult to follow the storyline's direction. I believe there was potential for the film to deliver a powerful commentary on the themes it addresses, but ultimately it doesn’t quite succeed. The movie gradually intensifies in its psychological impact, including some violent moments, seemingly building toward a satisfying conclusion. However, instead of delivering a dramatic resolution, the story concludes with a sequence of social media posts and messages. The final section really loses the artistic style that this type of film could have possessed, and I suspect this might be because of constraints beyond the filmmaker’s influence. Iconic is worth watching for its visuals, and perhaps a younger audience would connect with the protagonist's experiences. This is certainly a director to watch, as they possess strong underlying concepts and I am eager to see them develop their skills even more.
