This film follows Rock Hudson as he leads an American submarine crew in a straightforward telling of Alistair McLean’s story concerning secret satellite operations. Patrick McGoohan and Ernest Borgnine are also present, portraying members of the team that journeys to a remote British weather outpost located in the Arctic region after it ceases contact. The narrative unfolds as they attempt to find out who among them is a spy attempting to undermine both the submarine and their assignment. Even with substantial investment in special effects and some photography that earned Oscar recognition for its underwater sequences, the movie feels stiff and moves at an unhurried pace. I found myself losing interest before it concluded because the various storylines became tangled. Running close to two and a half hours, the runtime is excessive.
