Wuchak on Ice Cream Man

7/10 · Apr 16, 2022

This low-budget horror-comedy manages to deliver a decent experience. Clint Howard is the star of this film, playing a character who murders people and animals before incorporating them into his 31 ice cream flavors as he travels through Southern California neighborhoods. Fans of 90s horror comedies, similar to the "Leprechaun" movies, may find something to enjoy here. It's frequently entertaining despite its low budget and some questionable performances from the child actors. Howard is well-suited for his part, resembling Jack Kirby’s depiction of the Puppet Master from The Fantastic Four comics. The plot centers on an ice cream vendor confronting a group of kids around 12 or 13 years old. Because the gore isn't meant to be taken seriously, the film doesn’t really succeed as horror. However, it is consistently amusing and occasionally very funny, even if it sometimes seems poorly made, presumably due to financial constraints. The female characters are a standout element of the movie, particularly Stephanie Champlin (also known as Stephanie Sumers) in her role as Janet. She has several good scenes—and appears fully clothed. Sandahl Bergman, who portrayed Valeria in the 1982 "Conan the Barbarian," also makes an appearance in a smaller part as one of the children’s mothers. Andrea Evans is another actress featured. While all three have limited screen time, Stephanie's role as Janet feels adequately developed. Jan-Michael Vincent and David Warner both appear in substantial roles; Vincent plays a detective and Warner portrays a pastor. It’s good to see Vincent again after his period of popularity in the 70s and 80s. Olivia Hussey is also present, appearing as an ambiguous asylum nurse. The score by Richard Lyons is fairly ordinary, with one surprising piano piece that somehow works well within the film's context. It’s repeated throughout the movie and stands out as a notable high point. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 24 minutes and was filmed in Pasadena & San Gabriel, California. GRADE: C+
