The group—Manny the mammoth, Sid the sloth, Diego the sabre-toothed tiger, and Scrat—are close companions who realize their comfortable existence in the snow is coming to an end as things begin to thaw. Deciding that moving to higher ground seems wise before they need waterproof boots, they set off on a journey. This trip provides Manny with a chance encounter when he meets Ellie, another mammoth who immediately dislikes him, mistakenly believing he’s a possum. While not the brightest of the bunch, the story moves forward through a lighthearted but familiar collection of animated escapades, complicated by the arrival of Crash and Eddie, who mostly serve to frustrate everyone. I found those two characters grating after a while, and it seemed that the plot had difficulty keeping up with the charm and cleverness of the initial movie. There are some amusing moments involving vultures, and Scrat’s acrobatic pursuit of his acorn still brings about laughter, but this series doesn't seem able to develop easily. The first Ice Age film worked well on its own; this one expands upon established characters and introduces new ones, yet unfortunately, the central story isn’t as compelling. It remains an accessible display of skilled animation, with enough in the writing to entertain people of all ages for a reasonably paced ninety minutes of enjoyable, though perhaps not particularly unforgettable, prehistoric entertainment.
