It’s hard to imagine spending even a small amount of money to see this film. Byron Haskin directed I Walk Alone, with a screenplay by Charles Schnee, Robert Smith, and John Bright based on a play by Theodore Reeves. The cast includes Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Lizabeth Scott, and Wendell Corey; the music is composed by Victor Young, and Leo Tover handled the cinematography. Frankie Madison (Lancaster) returns to New York after fourteen years in prison. Noll Turner (Douglas), Frankie’s former bootlegging associate, is now a successful nightclub owner, and Frankie expects him to keep a verbal promise of a '50:50' split from when he was arrested and Noll escaped punishment... The film offers a great contrast for the three lead performers. Lancaster embodies masculine incompetence and an unsettling demeanor, Douglas projects sophistication, intelligence, and intensity, while Scott brings a smoldering presence to her role, convincingly portraying a character struggling with internal conflict and a genuine desire for something more. The plot is engaging primarily because of Frankie’s sense of being out of step with the times; after his lengthy prison sentence, he discovers that the criminal world he once knew has significantly evolved. Nevertheless, he insists on reclaiming what he believes is rightfully his, resorting to outdated methods to achieve it. Kay Lawrence (Scott) isn't a stereotypical dangerous woman; she simply seems like one until the truth emerges and the story resolves itself (the way Tover shoots her scenes is particularly well done). Douglas clearly enjoys playing a villain, and the Noll Turner character allows him to be condescending, persuasive, and ruthless in his pursuit of financial advantage. Wendell Corey as Dave completes the central cast. As Frankie’s closest confidant, but also a somewhat timid lawyer, he has assisted Noll Turner with legal and financial matters while Frankie was incarcerated. The characters are all immersed in a classic noir setting, which makes for an enjoyable experience for those who appreciate that genre. It earns a 7/10.
