I've always found it difficult to fully grasp the widespread admiration for Fellini’s work. While his movies are visually striking, they often center on fairly superficial characters wandering through a world defined by wealth and a sense of hollowness. "Fausto" (Franco Fabrizi), in this instance, is portrayed as something of a ladies' man who finds himself in a troubled marriage with the sister of his friend "Moraldo" (Franco Interlenghi). He continues to have affairs, which she generally overlooks, until eventually she leaves with their child. Then he and his companion embark on a search for her... It’s possible that he has matured and genuinely feels something, but I wasn't convinced, and honestly, neither did I particularly want to be. The people in the story are womanizing, often drunk, and essentially irresponsible – though admittedly they are attractive men – but their condescending behavior toward those less fortunate is frustrating; their treatment of women, a characteristic I’ve noticed in Fellini’s films, feels outdated. It does offer some amusing scenes and remains enjoyable from an artistic standpoint. A decent film, certainly, but not exceptional.
