This was an unpleasant experience, and it’s unlikely I’ll revisit it, nor would I suggest others do so. I am generally fond of Eddie Murphy; often, I rely on him to elevate films because he has such a distinctive presence. However, the character he portrays here is just as irritating as Owen Wilson's, and that annoyance is heightened by Murphy’s larger-than-life personality – a quality this role doesn’t require subtlety from. Malcolm MacDowell delivers an effectively unsettling performance as the villain, and Famke Janssen, who previously played Xenia Onatopp in "Golden Eye," is convincing as a spy; I would have liked to see more of that aspect. The film largely consists of Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson portraying ridiculous characters and finding themselves in predicaments they are ill-equipped to manage. It doesn’t feel like a “spy movie” any more than knocking over a suit of armor does. It's closer to an action-comedy, perhaps comparable to "Rush Hour," though not as entertaining. I am not suggesting there is nothing positive about this film; I simply believe viewers can find better options by browsing Eddie Murphy’s past work or exploring other films available.
