The premise seemed promising: a look at a musician who charmed America, portraying a handsome and flawed figure who embraced life’s excesses—romance, deception, alcohol—but somehow Marc Abraham delivered a dull TV movie. Tom Hiddleston embodies the central character, yet his performance feels remarkably inert. While he captures Hank Williams' stage presence – that distinctive, almost awkward dance while singing – beyond that, the portrayal lacks substance. Williams wasn’t known for faithfulness, and the women in his life—his wife Audrey (Elisabeth Olsen), Bobbie (Wrenn Schmidt), and Billie Jean (Maddie Hasson)—are given very little to do that would add meaningful layers to this thin biographical film. The filmmakers attempted a documentary style, including black-and-white segments featuring Bradey Whitford as producer Fred Rose, and there are some enjoyable musical moments, particularly from the fiddle players; however, at over two hours, it’s a labored and disappointing attempt to bring a man to life through an actor who seemed more concerned with his appearance than conveying any genuine personality. It doesn't come close to something like "Walk the Line" (2005).
