It's disappointing when a promising idea gets weighed down by flawed filmmaking, and that's exactly what happens with this incomplete science fiction thriller. The story centers around three American and three Russian astronauts aboard the International Space Station who find themselves isolated when war erupts between their countries on Earth. What follows is a descent into conflict as each national team receives conflicting instructions to seize control of the station, no matter the cost. A key question arises: why? Given that it functions as a scientific research center, what strategic importance could a distant space facility hold for people struggling to survive a war back home? While an explanation eventually surfaces, its introduction is delayed, creating a prolonged sense of confusion and leaving viewers wondering about the purpose behind this sudden shift. It’s jarring to see these supposedly intelligent, friendly, and mature scientists instantly transform into violent rivals vying for territory. Even when the reason is revealed, it feels insufficient to justify such behavior from people who are presented as being above the petty political squabbles of those on Earth. This is especially noticeable given the numerous instances where the film emphasizes the crew's supposed enlightened perspective and sense of unity, qualities that are heavily stressed early on. The core problem stems from a weak story and a script that struggles to compensate for it. The special effects also fall short for a science fiction movie; the filmmakers could have done much more to make the visuals more captivating. Director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, previously acclaimed for her excellent documentary “Blackfish” (2013), seems out of her depth with this film, which would have benefited from a more experienced guiding hand to turn it into the suspenseful thriller it had the potential to be. Instead, viewers are given an average science fiction story that feels like something you’d expect to see on Syfy or another low-budget cable channel. You can safely pass this one by.
