The series manages to capture moments where the confined feeling of living on the International Space Station, shared by American and Russian scientists, is palpable. The introduction of “Foster” (Ariana DeBose) increases the number of crew members to three from each country, but it doesn't take long for unsettling news to arrive from Earth. Apparent volcanic eruptions are happening globally, followed by a near-total loss of communication. The American astronauts receive instructions that they believe their Russian colleagues have also been given. What follows is a rather unremarkable science fiction thriller attempting to create suspense through performances that don’t quite land and dialogue that feels forced. DeBose does an adequate job, but Chris Messina delivers his characteristic stiff performance—though one scene did remind me of Brian Blessed's iconic line. The special effects are serviceable, yet the characters lack depth, and the believability of the situation is questionable. It’s like watching two opposing groups sharing a space station. The ending doesn’t entirely hold up under scrutiny, but it does prompt consideration of how human kindness and morality measure against national allegiance—particularly when the advantages of either are unclear. It's not awful, but I’ve enjoyed more compelling installments of "Space 1999."
