There's an argument to be made for I, Robot (2004) having earned its place among well-regarded films of its kind. It’s good to see this film has a following that has prevented it from sinking into the realm of forgettable big-budget science fiction. When it first came out, many questioned whether Will Smith could successfully lead the movie. There were also worries voiced by fans of Isaac Asimov about how faithful the adaptation would be to his work. Ultimately, I, Robot is a blend of different sci-fi concepts, drawing inspiration from Asimov and Eando Binder’s novel of the same name; it's an enjoyable combination that results in a cop story set against a backdrop of science fiction intrigue. After watching it again after quite some time, I still feel it works well as a solid genre film with enough substance to make you think. The futuristic mystery is presented effectively through Alex Proyas’ direction, which suits the material, and Will Smith comfortably handles the action-oriented lead role. However, the biggest success—beyond the narrative itself—is Alan Tudyk's portrayal of Sonny, the computer-generated character; his voice acting and human-like movements are exceptionally well done, making him a joy to watch. The film features impressive visuals (and received an Oscar nomination), has a strong story, energetic action sequences, above-average performances (though Bridget Moynahan doesn’t entirely succeed in her role as a scientist), and provides a thoroughly enjoyable evening for anyone seeking a rental that reliably delivers on its promise of robotic-themed entertainment. 7.5/10
