A strange killer, assembled with parts like Frankenstein’s monster, begins stalking Los Angeles. Jenny Wright portrays a bookstore employee who also dreams of acting; she realizes that the disturbing stories she reads by an obscure writer are manifesting in reality as a murderer who collects body parts. Clayton Rohner takes on the role of her detective boyfriend and Stephanie Hodge plays the proprietor of the bookshop. Filmed in November 1987, “I, Madman” didn't reach screens until 1989. It combines aspects of the Frankenstein narrative with the slasher movie trend, set against a backdrop of an appealing book lover’s life in downtown Los Angeles. Essentially, this isn't your typical, predictable slasher film. While the killer is unsettling and his crimes are disturbing, it doesn't take itself too seriously. The visuals have a deliberately exaggerated quality, which aligns with the movie’s colorful pulp fiction style. The 2012 remake of "Maniac" clearly drew inspiration from this one, though in a darker and more artistic way. Jenny Wright stands out as the central character. She was gaining recognition during the 80s, notably appearing in “Near Dark” (1987), but “I, Madman” marked her final significant role, despite having a memorable appearance in “Young Guns II” (1990). Unfortunately, her acting career declined soon after due to issues with substance abuse; she did eventually recover, though she lost enthusiasm for performing. Michelle Fozounmayeh also makes an impression in a small part. The film’s length is 1 hour and 29 minutes, and it was filmed in Los Angeles. GRADE: B-
