Kamurai on I Love You, Beth Cooper

6/10 · Jul 19, 2020

It’s an okay film; I wouldn’t mind watching it again, but I can’t really push anyone to see it. I often confuse this movie with “She’s Out of My League.” They're quite different films, but they share some similarities. Both are decent enough and have their funny moments, though neither one sticks in your memory for long, and you probably aren’t missing much if you decide to pass on either. My biggest issue is the amount of serious crime that happens throughout the movie. I'm not talking about minor offenses; there’s physical violence, jokes referencing sexual assault, cocaine use, threats, significant property damage, breaking and entering, and what seems like illegal tracking. A lot of this stuff just happens out in the open, in front of adults and people in positions of authority, even someone in uniform. I understand giving kids some leeway, but these are high school graduates—likely eighteen years old—and it doesn’t seem right that no one gets arrested. It also implies that a character like that would have a long criminal record. I do appreciate the story itself, as awkward as it is. I enjoy underdog narratives, and this qualifies as a powerful coming-of-age tale for at least three characters. However, because the situation presented feels so unrealistic, and the actors played their parts just a little too convincingly, it falls short. The performances are strong individually, but the characters don’t really click together, even as the movie goes on. The film also has a habit of undermining the main character at unexpected moments. While we're supposed to connect with one of the boys (or possibly Beth Cooper), there are several instances where they come across as pathetic or unpleasant—and in her case, just plain mean—which really pulls me out of the story. I believe it’s better to have characters who are completely beyond redemption than ones whose likability fluctuates like this movie's does. It could be a pleasant enough way to spend some time, but there are so many other movies I would recommend first: “Superbad,” “Can’t Hardly Wait,” "She's All That," “Booksmart,” and “Eurotrip” come to mind.
