Wow. Just… wow. I wasn’t sure what to anticipate going into this film; I don’t usually go for movies about fashion, and I hadn’t seen anything by Boots Riley before. But within the first quarter hour, all my reservations vanished, and it just kept improving from there. Seriously, how many films have you encountered lately featuring literal demons who are also fashion models and champions at… well, let's just say a particular skill? I won’t elaborate further to avoid spoiling anything for those interested in experiencing this wonderful film, other than to say that it has all the elements of a future cult favorite and is truly a remarkable work of modern cinema. If you want a hilarious comedy that will have you laughing throughout while also cleverly criticizing our current global capitalist system—a system perpetuated by superficial, pretentious, and avaricious billionaires—then this is essential viewing. Even those who enjoy fashion will find plenty to shock and surprise them, and fans of Keke Palmer absolutely must see it; she certainly deserves multiple awards for her performance. I know I’ll be watching this gem again many times, and now I've added Boots Riley's previous film to my list. I seriously question whether any of the negative “reviews” out there come from people who actually saw the movie. There seems to be a deliberate effort to suppress or discredit it—perhaps because of its direct criticism of capitalism, or maybe due to the leading roles being played by powerful Black women. This is all the more reason to watch it yourself and consider why certain powerful entities might not want you to see it. The only things that prevented me from giving this a perfect score were its depiction of drug (including alcohol) use and the inclusion of Demi Moore, an actress who has publicly supported Israel’s occupation of Palestine. However, Boots Riley's and Poppy Liu's support for Palestine helps alleviate my disappointment regarding her involvement.
