Looking back at films released in 2019, I’ve come to appreciate what a great year it was for people who love movies! There were so many excellent films, including Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Parasite, 1917, Toy Story 4, and others. Still, this animated film didn't initially grab my attention, but after watching it yesterday, I regret not seeing it sooner. I really enjoyed every aspect of the animation: the writing, the music (the songs are truly special and feel like works of art), the character development, the flashbacks, and the romantic elements. As I mentioned, the soundtrack is beautiful. A track called 'J'ai Perdu Mon Corps'—and other songs in a similar style—really amplifies the emotions in each scene where it plays. The way the filmmakers created an experience that leaves you wondering about the ‘hand’s’ journey and what truly occurred is another powerful element of the film. The rain, the overall atmosphere... everything is gorgeous. I just wish there had been more at the very end. I tried to make sense of what happened. Where would he go? Did he leave her permanently? Would he ever return to his uncle’s place? Will he ever find his footing? What I mean is that I didn't feel like the film reached a proper resolution; it felt as if it ended before the story was truly complete. The dialogue was also exceptional... It prompts you to think deeply about things. Some of my favorites include: Naoufel: Do you believe in fate? No, seriously. Gabrielle: That everything is predetermined? That we follow a set path? Naoufel: Yeah. Gabrielle: And that we can’t alter anything? Naoufel: We like to think we can, but we can't. It’s an illusion. Unless we do... something completely unexpected and irrational. That’s the only way to create a positive outcome. The Father: I never said it would be simple. You can’t always come out on top. That’s just how life is. Naoufel: To be disconnected from everything like that… It must feel peaceful. To see nothing... hear nothing...
