It's a truly excellent film featuring Wendy Hiller and Roger Livesey. Hiller portrays a young woman from England who becomes engaged to an older, considerably wealthier man, who then asks her to accompany him to a secluded Hebridean island. She makes it to a nearby island, but is kept there by severe storms and must stay put. While she’s waiting, she starts interacting with the local residents—including Livesey, playing the exceptionally Scottish "Torquil MacNeill"—and finds herself developing feelings for him, leading to considerable anxiety. Powell & Pressburger delivered an agreeable romantic adventure; it's well-crafted, boasts memorable characters (such as John Laurie and Finlay Currie), and, combined with the harsh weather conditions, effectively conveys a sense of isolation inherent to these Scottish Islands, along with the kindness and shrewdness of their inhabitants. The film includes moments of humor and culminates in a suspenseful conclusion; it’s definitely one of their strongest works.
