Henri (Jean-Pierre Léaud) is feeling so low that he resolves to end his life, though not through conventional means. Instead, he hires a local gangster for £1,000 to carry out the task like a professional hit. The gangster accepts, seeing it as a straightforward transaction, and assigns the job to his experienced enforcer, Kenneth Colley—who also has his own troubles. Complicating things further, Henri is in a pub, anticipating what he believes will happen, when he encounters Margaret (Margi Clarke), who’s trying to earn a living selling flowers. After they talk briefly, it seems there's a chance their connection could lead to him reconsidering his plan. Is such a change of heart even possible for him? There is a refund option if the job isn’t completed, but what about if he decides to call it off? The stories of these three main characters intertwine in an appealing way as something that initially seemed like a ridiculous certainty begins to evolve into a more charming and character-driven narrative. Margi Clarke consistently delivers a certain captivating presence on screen, and she complements Léaud, who I don’t believe has previously appeared in an English-language film. His vulnerabilities and even his awkwardness with language contribute to the unique quality of his increasingly aware character. The film also benefits from its concise length; at just under eighty minutes, it progresses swiftly, telling the story in a concentrated manner that avoids getting bogged down in excessive emotion and maintains suspense.
