It’s hard to believe something like this could actually occur. “Marla Grayson,” portrayed by Rosamund Pike, is a calculating and deceptive person who exploits vulnerable individuals—whether their hardship is genuine or fabricated—to place them in supervised living facilities, heavily medicated, while she liquidates their outside assets. A well-constructed group of collaborators supports her efforts, depending on a legal system that trusts the judgments of medical professionals, care home administrators, and this truly unpleasant woman. Along with her girlfriend “Fran” (Eiza González), she targets "Jennifer" (Dianne Wiest), and things proceed as anticipated until it becomes clear that Jennifer isn't who they believed her to be, and influential parties are determined to secure her release and recover her property. Peter Dinklage then appears, managing to convey a sort of humorous threat—there’s an amusing moment where he covers his face from a bank camera in an attempt to conceal himself within a large group of men of similar stature – which is, of course, absurd. He decides to free the woman and possesses significant resources. “Grayson” retaliates, and what had been a reasonably engaging narrative rapidly deteriorates into absurdity. Her character demonstrates intelligence and cunning, but as frequently happens in films like this, she abruptly gains the abilities of an expert ninja while her adversary, the supposedly intimidating gangster, seems no more dangerous than he was previously. It feels as though someone composed the initial forty minutes, then took a break for tea and had their five-year-old child complete the rest. Ultimately, the conclusion did deliver what I hoped for—a surprising twist—and Pike is quite effective initially; she skillfully portrays this unfeeling woman, provoking irritation with her actions. It’s disappointing that everything crumbled so rapidly and completely, though.
