Wuchak on I Can Only Imagine

6/10 · Feb 18, 2019

“I Can Only Imagine,” which came out in 2018, tells the story of MercyMe’s Bart Millard (played by J. Michael Finley). The movie follows his life from childhood through experiences like dealing with an abusive father (Dennis Quaid), finding love with Madeline Carroll's character, forming the band, struggling during early tours, getting a manager (Trace Adkins), and ultimately achieving success with their signature song. This relatively unassuming inspirational film isn’t quite up there with classics like “Coal Miner’s Daughter” from 1980 or even "La Bamba" (1987). It's close to the Johnny Cash biopic “Walk the Line” (2005), though it was made for a fifth of the budget and doesn't have quite the same refinement. Finley, who isn’t widely known, does a good job in the lead role. Carroll is charming; however, her role feels underdeveloped. The movie sticks to familiar formulas, but I connected with the challenges between the father and son, and the story culminates in an uplifting and moving rendition of their famous song. The film's length is 1 hour and 50 minutes, and it was filmed entirely in Oklahoma. GRADE: B-/C+
